The More than Me Academy provides girls in West Point Slum of Liberia education, health and social services to transform their own lives. Founder, Katie Meyer, and the More than Me Academy team believes every girl has the right to choose the life she wants. More than Me Academy is the first tuition free school in Liberia. This academy supply the girls with two balanced meals, psychological guidance, access to healthcare, libraries, and computers and after school programs. The school runs from 7am to 5pm to keep the girls off the streets for the entire day. More than Me Academy takes a holistic approach to education, making it impossible to fail. It prepares the girls to be future leaders and assets to the community.[/font]
The More than Me Academy has created an engaging, exciting and energetic environment for the students. Not only does the academy make education fun, it also provides quality education. 100% of the MTM Academy teachers have received training. It is also able to maintain its small teacher to student ratio to ensure every student receives the attention they deserve. The Academy uses the U.S common core curriculum for the girls. With the help of donations and partners, More than Me Academy is able to provide scholarships and opportunities for the girls who want to go to college.
During the July 30th 2014 #Givchat, Katie Meyer was asked about the challenges of More than Me Academy. Katie mentioned the challenges of Ebola and the safety of the girls. The girls in Liberia are some of the most vulnerable yet valuable people on Earth.
Katie shared some of her proudest moments such as opening the More than Me Academy, having President of Libya cut the ribbon and seeing Josephine write her name for the first time. She also advises to “do what’s best for your own population of students.” Katie was asked what we can do to contribute to the cause. She responded” We have fundraising campaigns where you can help!” with an attached link. The ultimate goal is for all the girls to graduate with the ability to decide what comes next for their lives. Academies like MTM allow girls to explore their full potentials and to become future leaders of their societies.
