Profile

VietHope's Youth Development Program is a seven-day summit that aims to help Vietnamese first-year college students develop invaluable skills in communications, teamwork, project management, and community service. The modules are taught by volunteers from top-notch companies and organizations in Vietnam and the U.S. After structured training, participants embark on one of the hallmarks of the program the opportunity to plan and lead a 3-day community service project. During the service project, students apply their new skills and draw valuable lessons.
VietHope selects participants from the latest pool of university scholarship recipients. Using this existing pipeline is an intentional and deliberate part of our strategy. This enables us to leverage the rigor of the scholarship program's selection process to identify the most promising of these scholars, and then build atop the financial support with intensive leadership development. By layering support in this way, we deliver the right service to the right students at the right time, and compound the impact for the most promising VietHope scholars.

History

As an organization whose mission is to help youths rise out of poverty, we see the lack of soft skills as a crucial problem to solve if we want to help students truly excel in their professional lives and their communities. This led us to partner with the Union of North American Vietnamese Students Associations (uNAVSA) to implement the inaugural Youth Development Program in July 2009.

Impact

Pre-and-post survey analyses have shown that after 7 days of the program, over 90% of the participants experienced a growth in self-confidence when speaking in front of a group, leading a project, and collaborating with people they did not know well. Our Youth Development Program alumni have gone on to create and sustain their own youth-led organizations in Can Tho and Saigon.

Team Credentials

VietHope is a youth-based and volunteer-driven non-profit with nearly 15 years of experience in providing successful, sustained educational programs to disadvantaged youth in Vietnam. The organization has directly invested nearly half a million dollars in over 4000 disadvantaged students in Vietnam. With the support of donors and funders such as yourselves, VietHope annually delivers 200 scholarships as well as 2 different educational enrichment programs to Vietnamese students with high need and high potential. Through these hands-on programs, we bring some of the best curriculum and teaching methodology from schools such as Yale and Stanford to our scholars. Our programs instill in our students a stronger motivation to be successful in school and a stronger drive to give back to their communities.

  • Meet some of the Viethope Scholars!

Meet Toan Born into a large family where the main way of earning living is farming. Toans father died early and the burden of daily expenses for the entire family depends on his mothers farmwork. At one point, Toan had to quit school because his family could not afford to pay for his studies. After spending some time working different jobs, Toan realized that education was the only way to change his life. That was why he made up his mind and decided to sit for the entrance exam to HCMC Economics University to continue his dream. Previously, I had attended a university in HCMC but I could only complete 2 semesters and then I had to stop, because my familys income was not enough to pay all my education expenses. But I always continued to long to attend university, because that is not only an honor but also a new door opening to my future. But along with that is the burden that my family faces, the many worries my mom will deal with with all the expenses. I felt happy, and worried a...
