Profile

Like many in my village, I did not own my first set of clothing until I was five years old. My family had been too poor to buy cloth. My family rents fields from others, and my father works a second job as a manual laborer downtown. My family must pay tuition for my brother and me – I am in middle school and my brother is in elementary school. During one tough time, I dropped out of class for a semester because my family couldn’t afford my tuition fee.

Originally, I lived in a remote rural area, from where children would walk five hours to get to school since public transportation was not available. My old home was about 5 miles away from my current school. Everyday, I had to walk for an hour and a half to get to school. Because my parents wanted my brother and me to be closer to school, we decided to move, and found a nice neighbor willing to rent some farmland out. Unfortunately, the weather was very bad. When there was a storm, my family would have nothing to eat for several days. During these difficult times, my neighbors usually invited my whole family to dinner.

I started helping my father and mother out on the farmland at a very young age. At age six, I followed my father to the timberlands to lumber. One day, my father asked me to watch the carriage. It was raining heavily during that time and the ground was muddy. The horse was frightened by the storm, so it sprinted away with the carriage. Unfortunately, the wheel ran right across my left leg. Because my family did not have money to see a doctor, my left leg never fully recovered from the fracture. My mother continued to farm, but took a second job doing housework for others in order to make money to support the entire family. Even with the additional income, my parents did not have enough to cover my daily expenses at school. When my parents could not longer afford my schooling, my beloved headmaster and teacher were able to pull together some money to pay for my room and board fees. As a result, I was lucky to stay in school. From that day onward, I made up my mind to study and work hard in order to repay the people around me for their kindness and to give back to society.

  • Jianping He: Another year complete!

We are now fundraising to support Jianping for another year! As you can read from his handwritten letters, your contribution has made a tremendous difference. $250 paid for tuition, books, school supplies, and transportation for the 2009-2010 school year. Unlike some of our other partners which provide a one-time grant to a student, the scholarships provided by the Peach Foundation last for two years in order to provide the children with a sustained period of education. In September, the children returned to school, and we are hoping to raise another $280 for the 2010-2011 year. One of the most innovative aspects of Givology is the opportunity to make connections across the world – both inspiring and being inspired by the children that you support. We sincerely hope you consider supporting Jianping again. Even if you choose not to make a financial contribution, we still urge you to send him a message that we can deliver. Words of encouragement can go a very long way!
  • Update from Jianping - Summer 2010

We recently received this letter from Jianping He. Please message him back to show your continued support as he begins his junior year! -- Dear Givology, Thank you for your concern and support for me, as well as your concern for my family. My family and I are all very well. They are currently busy with farm work - my father can always find farm work for us to do. Recently, my situation in school hasn't been ideal - there were many lessons that were hard for me to understand without putting in extra effort and asking questions. I haven't been able to maintain consistent grades - they keep going up and down - and I think this may be because my study methods have changed. This is already the second semester of my sophomore year. I still have to face the general examinations at the end of the semester, and then as soon as September starts, I will be a high school junior, and I will definitely have to put in extra effort to raise my grades. My teacher has said before that it is w...
  • Update from Jianping He - May 2010

Below is a recent update from Jianping He. Please message him back to show your continued support! Dear Givology, I am Jianping He. I was very happy to receive your letter. We just started a new semester, and I'm hoping that this semester, I can bring my grades up. If I can't, then I'm really hopeless. Ever since I was born I've been impoverished, and I've helped my parents farm every now and then, so I have a spirit that's able to bear hardship? I'm a pretty extroverted person, and I'm rather tolerant - I don't like to quibble over little things. I kind of like math, and I kind of like English, because through this class I've become familiar with some interesting stories. I really like sports, especially basketball, and when I'm feeling down I'll go play basketball or take a jog. Sometimes I'll also play ping pong, which is also very fun. When I have time, I like to read books outside of class, because from books I can learn about...

  • Update: April 11, 2009

Dear Uncles and Aunties, Thanks for all your support and kindness. I'll do my best to return this huge favor. I'm doing well at school. Though I'm loaded with school work, by handling them properly it's in fact not that hard to deal with. Among all the subjects, I'm most interested in English, and then Chinese. I enjoy doing Chemistry experiments. Physics isn't easy but it's fun to learn. Also, I love my classmates and teachers. They're very nice people. There're currently 4 people in my family, with my dad working in the city to support us. We're planting corn instead of hot pepper this year, mostly because hot pepper didn't sell well last year and the price is relatively low. Unfortunately, my younger brother passed away because of improper medical treatment. It was last year when I went to summer camp for the very first time. Now I'm in Grade 10 Class 3, Yan Yuan Ming Zu Middle School, Yan Yuan County, Sichuan Province. I hope in th...
