An Update from SKIP Peru: Thanks for your support!

SKIP ALTO TRUJILLO EXTENSION PROJECT
How things went in 2014:
Our Satellite project SKIP Alto Trujillo started at the Solaris school in 2013 with 11 children. This new project was a collaboration between SKIP and the primary school where classroom space was provided free of charge for SKIP to use in order to provide lessons and homework help to children, in addition to workshops for parents and carers. For 2014 we moved the project to a new location in the Virgin Del Carmen School. As a much larger school than Solaris, Virgin Del Carmen has a wider pool of families for us to receive referrals from, which will make the project more sustainable in the long term.
At the start of the year 35 children were enrolled, this was less than the 43 children that had been planned but a few families did not complete the final stages of pre-programme and so were dropped from the classes at the start of 2014. Pre-programme is a series of assessments and interviews which help us to determine which families are selected to work with SKIP.
Over the course of the year, a further 9 children left the programme due to poor attendance and so we finished the year with 26 children remaining. This meant that we achieved our goal for the year to double the number of children that we were working with. The impact of departures from children with poor attendance can be seen in the average attendance scores which rose from 54% at the start of the year in April to 97% by December. Over the year child attendance in classes was 86%
(We conducted testing at the start and end of the year in order to track the children's progress in their classes. Results also showed impressive progress as test scores increased on average by 32% in Communications scores and 22% in Maths.
Christmas Celebrations:
The year ended with a huge Christmas party for all the families we work with held in the Virgen Del Carmen school as they kindly let us use their premises for the festivities. We were able to provide gifts for all the families and each of the children as well as prizes and awards for superstar kids who had worked especially hard throughout the year. All the children received certificates recognising their contribution to classes in 2014.
Then we feasted on hot chocolate, empanadas and paneton, as is traditional in Peru before having a little dance before it was all over and time to go home it was a magical day for everyone!!
Start of 2015:
For January and February we ran a holiday club for 6 weeks at our Community Centre and children from the Extension project were invited to join in, which a number chose to do. Classes were provided Monday to Thursday in the morning and on Fridays there was the opportunity to have swimming lessons, facilitated by SKIP volunteers at the local pool.
New school year:
The new school year began at the start of March and so we have been busy getting things ready. Children were provided with school shoes, uniforms, and materials (pens, pencils, rulers, exercise books etc) so that they had everything they needed for the start of the year.
Then classes began in March, again children have been given tests in English, Communications and Maths so that we can track their progress throughout the year.
