Profile

My family has a couple acres of field and farmland. Due to the recent dry spell, the output of these fields is not much. My younger sister and I are the only two children in my family, and our parents love us so much. My father is a farmer, as well as my disabled mother.

The day I started school, my mother broke down into tears because she realized that she could never afford to pay tuition for her children to fully complete their education. For the majority of my sister's and my life, all our clothes were given to us by kind friends. When I was in fourth grade, I got a disease that forced my family to use the little money that we had saved to pay for my medical expenses. My father even sold his own blood to get money for me. Luckily, I was treated and cured.

I used to be number one in my class, but after I went to middle school, my performance dropped noticeably. I lost confidence and courage, becoming unsure about my future life and studies. I didn’t know if my family could pay for my educational expenses. I lost concentration, but tried to believe that there was another solution. I know I still have to try my best.

After hearing about the Peach Foundation, I tried to study harder to make good grades, and hoped that others would want to help me. I believe that I can help my sister and myself by receiving grant money to relieve the financial burdens on my family. If given financial support, I can prove myself and my academic success

Updates

  • Shangui Yan: another year completed!

Givology is fundraising to support Shangui for another year! As you can see from his updates, Shangui has really benefited from your support. Please continue to help him go to school! Unlike some of our other partners which provide a one-time grant to a student, the scholarships provided by the Peach Foundation last for two years in order to provide the children with a sustained period of education. In September, the children returned to school, and we are hoping to raise another $150 for the 2010-2011 year. One of the most innovative aspects of Givology is the opportunity to make connections across the world – both inspiring and being inspired by the children that you support. We sincerely hope you consider supporting Shangui again. Even if you choose not to make a financial contribution, we still urge you to send him a message that we can deliver. Words of encouragement can go a very long way!

  • Translation of Shangui's Letter

Apologies for the delay! Below is a translation of Shangui's latest letter. Please message him to show your continued support! Also, as you can see from this letter, Shangui seems a bit confused about the role of Givology in funding his education. Thanks, The Givology Translation Team -- Dear friends from Givology, How are you? I’m very excited to have received your letter, and very grateful for your support. • One Year Complete!

Shangui Yan has successfully completed one year of school! As you can read from his handwritten letters , your contribution has made a tremendous difference. $250 paid for tuition, books, school supplies, and transportation for the 2008-2009 school year. Unlike some of our other partners which provide a one-time grant to a student, the scholarships provided by the Peach Foundation last for two years in order to provide the children with a sustained period of education. In September, the children returned to school, and we are hoping to raise another $250 for the 2009-2010 academic year.
