Profile

Bibliotheque Club de L’Amitie de CODEVA. is the only communal center for learning in the region, serving 8100 school age children and 62 rural schools. The library desperately needs children’s books and reference materials in all subjects in French, Creole, and English. The current inventory is outdated and includes, for example, a collection of English language Collier Encyclopedias from 1929. Donations from Givology will enable the library to purchase reading materials as selected by local school principals. In addition, the library lacks technological resources. Further funding will provide a computer and printer for student research.

History

In 2005, the La Vallee community development Bank, CODEVA, established the Bibliotheque Club de L’Amitie to serve as a community library. The library is centrally located in donated space next to the market place in Ridore. Community members now living in the United States and Canada provided the initial book inventory. Sadly, in 2007 the library was forced to close due to lack of funding. Last year, members of the CODEVA organization re-opened the library and hired Mr. Francele Mamousette as the librarian. Bibliotheque Club de L’Amitei is the only library in the region and is intended to serve as an educational resource for all of the area’s 62 schools.

Impact

The 62 schools scattered throughout the La Vallee region lack reading and research materials other than textbooks. Most of the area’s 8100 children have no access to basic picture books, storybooks, or reference books. The library will allow these children to discover the joy of reading for pleasure. It will also provide research books to students and their parents, exposing them for the first time to the world of information. The addition of computer access will likewise broaden educational opportunities. In sum, the library will help to combat illiteracy, promote leisure reading, and unlock potential for learning throughout the community.

Team Credentials

4. Project Team Credentials: The La Vallee Alliance Advisory Council in Haiti is comprised of local community leaders, principals, and religious leaders. Antonica Payen is the program director in La Vallee. She is a small business owner with dual citizenship in the United States and Haiti. She has been active in the local community development organization (CODEVA), along with her husband Theodore, for more than twenty years. Reverend Guy Domond serves as an Educational Advisor to the Council. He serves as the parish priest and supervises two Catholic schools in the region. Frere Lamy Desalines, Marie Paulette Payen, and Jean Hermanais, all local school principals, also serve on the Advisory Council. These leaders will help select the appropriate books and materials to be purchased for the library. Care will be taken to provide books ranging from picture books to adult fiction and reference books.

Updates

  • La Vallee Alliance Library Project Update

Dear Givology, Thank you to our many donors who contribute to the matching campaign through Givology. The library now has hundreds of new books, wiring for power, a secure door, desks and shelves, and, soon, a new bathroom! Our dedicated librarian is working with the construction crew and we hope to continue to raise funds to install solar power and a generator by the end of the year. Twenty-three summer camp volunteers carried 1800 pounds of supplies from Virginia to La Vallee in July. Included in those donations were several hundred books for the library. The first attached photo shows some of the volunteers delivering the books to librarian Francene Mamousette. The second photo is students in the La Vallee summer enrichment camp enjoying some of the new books donated for the community library. The summer enrichment camp was quite successful, and Alliance volunteers got the opportunity to get to know some of the amazing students in La Vallee. Students in the camp were able to use ...
