In 2013, U.S President Barack Obama said, “Across the globe there are girls who will one day lead nations, if only we afford them the chance to choose their own destinies.” Dedicated to educating and empowering 500 girls, Starfish One by One, Givology’s grassroots partner in Guatemala, is certainly on pace to unlocking an unprecedented cadre of women leaders! Through its vocal empowerment program Give Her a Voice, Starfish One by One hopes to build deep reservoirs of resiliency in each Girl Pioneer and help her find her unique voice.
What is Give Her a Voice about?
Women in Guatemala suffer the worst gender gap in the Western hemisphere; often relegated to the fringes of society, they find themselves marginalized and unable to assert their ideas and beliefs. With a powerful fusion of bar-setting mentorship, rigorous innovation and thorough support for each Girl Pioneer, Give Her a Voice hopes to challenge this social norm. Its mission is simple: to train girls in vocal empowerment and resiliency, so that they are abundantly confident in their abilities to effect positive change in their communities and country.
What makes Give Her a Voice different from other projects?
Give Her a Voice is estimated to help over 200 Mayan girls in Guatemala. In spirit of collaborative learning, Starfish has partnered with an expert in the field of vocal resiliency – Dr. Beth Osnes, a professor at the University of Colorado. Starfish has also partnered with The Trauma Resource Institute, a national leader in trauma resiliency and positive growth, to empower Girl Pioneers, many of whom have grown up in violent and emotionally stressful environments. Over the course of the Give Her a Voice program, Girl Pioneers will learn how to articulate their views, needs and futures, honing valuable speaking and communication skills to tackle deeply entrenched social paradigms.
What will be the impact of Give Her a Voice?
· By providing vocal empowerment and resiliency programs, Starfish One by One will be giving girls the solid foundation needed to not only bolster their self-confidences, but also discover their unique voices
· Give Her a Voice, a program that stresses the unity of women, will allow girl pioneers to progress as an enlightened community of women, who are able to challenge the rationale for social axioms
· Give Her a Voice will see mentors providing comprehensive support to girls so that they can recover from traumatic life experiences and seek proper help and advice
· In a way similar to Starfish One by One’s other projects, Give Her a Voice does not just “reinvent the wheel” and relies on valuable partnerships to expedite learning and spur positive development
