To introduce myself, my name is Joyce Meng and I am a student at Oxford University studying economics and finance. I was born in Texas, though now I live in Northern Virginia, about thirty minutes outside of Washington DC. My school is very far from my home (across the Atlantic Ocean!), so I don’t often have a chance to return home during the academic year. I completely agree with you – regardless of distance, a mother’s love can make one brave and strong, ready to confront any challenges.
I am very happy to hear that you are enjoying your studies! What is your favorite subject? My favorite subjects in high school were mathematics and history. My father and mother studied mathematics and computer engineering in university, and my little sister is a biomedical engineer. In my family, I am the only one who is not studying a science – sometimes they tease me for that!
I admire your dream of being an agricultural engineer – you can really make a difference! Your work can help communities across the world improve crop yields and better manage limited environmental resources. How did you get inspired to become an agricultural engineer?
Like you, I also like reading poetry and listening to music. Who are your favorite performers and poets? My favorite poets are Pablo Neruda and Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. I read their work and often wonder how they were able to use language so beautifully! Do you also write poetry? I listen to a lot of classical music since I play the violin and piano, but I also enjoy listening to the radio and hearing all kinds of music.

My name is Xiang and I live on the West Coast in the United States. I was born in China but moved to the United States with my family when I was four years old. How do you like your school and what is your favorite class? I actually learned Spanish as my foreign language in high school but have not had a chance to practice it in a long time. Are you learning a foreign language as well? If so, how do you like it?
I've actually had a rabbit and chicken before as well! But my parents wouldn't let me have any larger pets because they worried I wouldn't be able to take care of it. I admire your dreams of becoming a veterinarian. Do you have a particular kind of animal you'd like to specialize in? Good luck with your studies and I look forward to hearing back from you.
